In case you didn't know Jonas and the wonderful Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under the magic wand of Tony Pappano recorded earlier this year an album of Verismo arias which is coming soon! In like very very soon :-))
If you can't wait from today you can preorder:
in Germany from amazon.de , scheduled issue date 17 September!
and in France from fnac.com , schedules issue date in France 27 September
UPDATE! (thanks HM:-) and on amazon.co.uk now listed as well, with no details on date yet ....
Nothing so far in the UK, but there is nothing to stop you from ordering from the above (check international sending costs before you do though to avoid surprises).
So, Verismo! But what is on it???? One thing is sure, it ain't Puccini! So who is up for a bit of a guessing game? ;-)))
From information available publicly, mostly things Jonas himself mentioned throughout the year in interviews, here is a potential list in no particular order:
Francesco Cilea:
..because he is going to sing Maurizio soon :-)))
Adriana Lecouvreur - L´anima ho stanca
Adriana Lecouvreur - La dolcissima effigie
and because he's put a personal stamp on the next one...
L'Arlesiana -Il Lamento di Federico
Pietro Mascagni:
..also because he said he would like to sing this..
Cavalleria Rusticana - Mamma, quel vino e generoso
and this is also less known:
Iris - Apri la tua finestra
Umberto Giordano:
..well, can't have him without this gorgeous opera! twice if possible :-)
Andrea Chenier - Un di all'azzurro spazio
Andrea Chenier - Come un bel dì di maggio
Andrea Chenier - Vicino a te (this is certain!!! thanks Kende! of course ,the beautiful duet with Eva-Maria Westbroek!!)
Ruggero Leoncavallo:
This is certain! :-)
Pagliacci - Vesti la giubba
but there could also be this much lesser known
La Boheme - Testa adorata
Amilcare Ponchielli:
If he is up than it must be this..
La Gioconda - Cielo e mar
but there has also been talk of this opera
I lituani - which i have never heard yet and of which i don't know the tenor aria...
Riccardo Zandonai:
...with this beauuuutiful aria! also certain i would say :-)
Giulietta e Romeo - Giulietta! son io!
Licinio Refice - Ombra di nube
This is certain as well ;-)
That is as far as my crystal ball would go :-)
Suggestions, ideas, comments? Anything to add or take away? Any favourites? Versions?
Feel free too add your thoughts :-)
I am not the biggest fan of Versimo myself, but some of these i really like and others i expect to get to know :-) Let's put it this way.. if these two can't make me rethink Verismo for myself then i am a lost cause, which i am hoping will not be the case :-)
Andrea Chenier scores three times...Vicino a te ;)
ReplyDeleteTu cres??? Ma non sara troppo???? But yes without it they are 13, funny number :-p
ReplyDeleteThen maybe we are 1 less and back to 12.. i would leave L'Arlesiana since he sings it anyway... but then again lately it was so good it would be a pity not to have it recorded... But soo much Chenier?? mio dio! ;-)
Truth be told there are plenty of versions on youtube of some of these, but although i clearly like the arias, i don't like any of the interpretations, they either scream around too much or there is so much crying in the voice it gets on my nerves.. which sums up my problem with Verismo! it's not the music that i have troubles with, it is the silly and exaggerated way it is sung!
Jeez Kende!!! it just hit me!! of coursee the duo with Evamari!!!!! oMG i am getting old, how awfulllll! :-(
ReplyDeletebut yes, of course and 14 is a perfect number!
Hehehehe, poor Evamari !! ;)
ReplyDeletePerhaps they left out one of the arias if they thought there is too much Chenier, don't know...not so sure about Lamento di Federico either...maybe there is only 12.
yes, and i am sooo lookin forward to hearing her live! :-) But yes i would also tip for 12 or 14, no way it is 13... maybe just 1 solo aria from Adriana and Chenier? But i would lean towaards more than less, ie 14 rather than 12... questions, questions...
ReplyDeleteWhich one do you like most of the list?
Vesti la giubba, I have no doubt :) But I'm very curious about how will Chenier arias sound to me with Jonas' voice ...and I like very much Ombra di nube too :)
ReplyDeleteHm i wonder about Chenier and Adriana to... Ah that la doooooliciiiiissimmaa effigieee! to dieeee for! I more looking forward to Mamma quel vino than vesti to be honest. But the ones which for now ,before listening to the CD, i like a lot are Giulietta somo io, Ombra di nube and Apri la tua finestra :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure at the opera I can get "in love" even with Adriana...which right now is my least favorite !
ReplyDeleteHmm.. maybe you are not listening to the "right" recording with Adriana ;-)))) I actually lik Gioconda better than both and all three , Adriana, Chenier and Gioconda much much better than Cavalleria and Pagliacci. Those are my two least favourite, not the arias themselves necessarily, but the operas.

Sure I'm not, I know :))) I have THE recording but I haven't heard it....Gule is the guilty one !
ReplyDeleteSorry , what i meant before was that is Aureliano Pertile singing Mein lieber Schwan! :-) In iatalian of course, but none the less beautiful :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd here Aureliano Pertile with La dolcissima effigie, so that Kende doesn't suspect me of sending her off to hear somebody she doesn't like as much as i do ;-))))
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10gsdlJl7WU
A , que tal eso? :-)
My dear if she is in it it can't be THE recording ;-) I'm sure you know what i am taling about, but this is one is more stylish :-)
ReplyDeleteSorry, jumping around... i should really make that post about Lohengrin!! Fascinating :-)))
ReplyDeleteAureliano Pertile with ....Da voi lontan, in sconosciuta terra :-) (In fernem Land)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vHfWrCQy7k
No, she is not in it...but she is the first Adriana I heard...and she destroyed it for me !
ReplyDeleteOh. but Montse should be able to recover you from that :-) You should give it another chance with her :-)))
ReplyDeleteAnd i just realised i deleted one of my own comments.. i had found the Pertile version of In fernem Land!! Beautiful!! But really it didn't belong in this discussion so just as well :-)
I liked much more "Cigno fedel" than "la dolcissima.." ..something not very good is happening to me !
ReplyDeleteI have to give Montse a chance then..and maybe Magda Olivero...too much work !
Well then, let's.. Wagner :-)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vHfWrCQy7k
Pertile... Da voi lontan, in sconosciuta terra :-)))
I don't know, i am still in Wagner mood myself, it has definitely been the big highlight of the last months :-)
But mixing it in with Apri la tua finestra and such stuff is good :-) The i will get hit with big dollop of Beethoven over the weekend.. i feel musically confused!! LOL
Wow !!! Soooooo beautiful !!! I'm definitely losing it...
ReplyDeleteBut I'm not that confused..I still like Puccini !!! :)))))) (And Pagliacci...)
You are beyond help, you are!!! ;-)))))
ReplyDeleteNot that i dislike Pagliacci ;-))) But i can only like it live for the time it lasts, it will never be something that i will feel like listening to at home, nor is Cavalleria...
But i can very happily listen to Lohengrin over and over and over again :-))))) Such is life!
By the way, seems like there are only the couple of arias from Lohengrin with Pertile , not a full recording :-( too bad...
Coming back to the above subject after getting lost in the Wagnerian forest.... i can't wait!!! to hear Ombra di nube... And listen to how all of that will sound with Tony conducting!!!
It will sound...as we never ever have heard it before ..I'm sure !! (Well, that is not really difficult with Ombra di nube because we only have heard the old recording from Muzio...) Tony is the best !! (No one can notice I am a fan, right ?)
ReplyDeleteWhat about "Amor ti vieta" from Fedora? Very short and the low tessitura would be ideal for JK.
ReplyDeleteQué bien pinta ese CD... que ganas de poder ecucharlo!
ReplyDeleteDo you know John i would actually love to hear that one again! At least i haven't in a long while... I don't know about ideal because of that paticular reason ;-) I'd say i'd love to hear even more from him because of those beauuuutiful loooong lines it requires :-) Yesterday i was thinking of the very same one :-)
ReplyDeleteBrunilda, from what is written in Jonas book, this CD will definitely be as fun to listen to as it was to make ;-))) I for one hope to be surprised!
ReplyDeleteI hope it too, Hariclea...
And i am looking forward to the duet with Westbroek very very much! let's hope they will sing more together in the future (Fanciulla, mmm) And i think you will like the Refice :-)
ReplyDeleteI think in any case it i very very interesting that JK's first Italian album should be with these pieces :-)
the boheme for sure.
